Bicycles

See the Recreation section of this guide for information about bike maps, registration, rentals, and other details.

Bicyclists must follow the same laws as motorized vehicles when riding on the street, including coming to complete stops at all stop signs and red lights and using a headlight before sunrise and after sunset. When riding on the sidewalk, bicyclists must have an audible signal such as a horn or bell and must yield to pedestrians. All fixed-route AATA buses have exterior bike racks that accommodate two bikes. There is no extra charge for a bike.

The getDowntown program (see Commuting Alternatives, below) has bike lockers at seven locations: Fifth Ave. & Huron; the Ashley & William and Ann Arbor District Library parking lots; and the Maynard, Fourth & Washington, Fourth & William, and Ann & Ashley parking structures. Lockers are $60/year.

The Washtenaw Bicycling and Walking Coalition, (864-4095) aims to promote and increase bicycling and walking through advocacy and education. Members include local organizations, agencies and retail stores, as well as individual cyclists and walkers. Meetings are generally held first Thurs., 7 p.m. at the Ecology Center, 117 N. Division. Contact to confirm meeting times. Website features biking-related news, laws, links, and details on upcoming projects. info@wbwc.org, wbwc.org

Friends of the Border to Border Trail, (487-9058) works to see that the Washtenaw County non-motorized Border to Border Trail is completed, maintained, enhanced, and used. Regular meetings, occasional walks, and bicycle trips. bordertoborder.org
