Theater, Dance, and Opera

The Ann Arbor area plays host to several community and semi-professional theater companies, with new shows going up every month. Ballet, modern, and traditional dance concerts abound, along with musical theater productions from Broadway to grand opera.

"Follies": Ann Arbor Civic Theatre.

Jan. 8-11. Brian Hilligoss directs Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's musical about the reunion of follies showgirls in a vintage vaudeville theater, where they are haunted by the ghosts of their former lives. Favorites in the score include "I`m Still Here," "Broadway Baby," "Too Many Mornings," "Losing My Mind," and "Could I Leave You?" Lydia Mendelssohn Theater. "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead": Performance Network Professional Season.

Every Thurs.-Sun., Jan. 8-Feb. 8. John Seibert directs Tom Stoppard's black comedy inspired by Shakespeare's Hamlet. It concerns 2 minor characters from the play, old school chums of the prince of Denmark, and depicts them as hapless pawns, vainly trying to make sense of their existence while impersonal political forces inexorably shape their fate. Stars Loren Bass & Malcolm Tulip. The Jan. 31 performance is a benefit for 826michigan. Performance Network, 120 E. Huron. "Future Stars 2009": Pioneer High School.

Jan. 9, 10, & 17. (different programs). Ann Arbor high school students perform 4 different variety shows. The audience response determines the winners in each of the 4 categories, who compete in the Jan. 17 finale. Last year over 1,200 people attended this popular show. Tonight: "Now Showing: Current Broadway Shows" (7 p.m.) and "On My iPod" (9:30 p.m.). 7 & 9:30 p.m., PHS Schreiber Auditorium, 601 W. Stadium at Main. This 6-member Montreal dance company, led by L.A. b-boy Victor "Rubberband" Quijada and Canadian ballet dancer Anne Plamondon, performs a high-energy combination of hip-hop and classical dance. Tonight's program, Punto Ciejo, is an exploration of virtual reality that is influenced by ballet and break and incorporates video.
